A Translation Report On Exploring Translation Theories,Chapter 1-2

This is a translation report based on the translation practice of the Exploring Translation Theories.This translation project is completed by teamwork.The author of the source text is Anthony Pym,who is a translation professor at Rovira i Virgili University in Spain.Exploring Translation Theories was published in 2010 by Routledge.It is an academic work on western translation theories and their research methods.Pym systematically combs and deeply analyzes the six paradigms of western translation theories from the 1960 s to the present,which are equivalence,purposes,descriptions,uncertainty,localization and cultural translation.This book is a further development of the connotation and extension of western translation theories.This translation project is a teamwork,in which each member is assigned one or two chapters to translate.The translator translated the first and second chapters,the content of these two chapters are “what is translation” and “natural equivalence”,a total of 13,000 words.In the translation process,the translator uses Skopos Theory of German functionalist school as the theoretical guidance,analyzes the typical cases in the translation process from the lexical level,syntactic level,textual level and cultural level,and solves the difficulties encountered in the translation process.According to Peter Newmark's Text Typology,this book is an informative text,which centers on the reader,and its function is mainly to convey the information of the source text,and Newmark argues that a text may not contain only one function.Therefore,the translator adopts communicative and semantic translation as the translation strategies.As an MTI student,the translator should have a reserve of knowledge in order to deal with various types of texts,so professional and extended knowledge are essential.Exploring Translation Theories covers a wide range of language and translation theories that can help the translator to consolidate her professional foundation,broaden her horizons of knowledge,and improve her translation skills.
