As a country boasting an ancient civilization,China has a recorded history of translation over two thousand years long, with rich translation theoretical discourses. The studies of the translation theories in Chinese tradition have constituted one of the important domains of the translation studies as a discipline in China today, and considerable research achievements have been reaped. The Chinese monograph Zhongguo Chuantong Yilun Jingdian Quanshi(A Critique of Translation Theories in Chinese Tradition)by Wang Hongyin is a representative achievement of them, which has brought about wide influence in China's community of translation studies. After its publication in 2003,the book has attracted great attention from domestic translation scholars. An English translation of the book will be conducive to transmitting Chinese translation scholars' research achievements to the English speaking world,to informing English readers of the long history of translation theories in Chinese tradition, and ultimately to contributing to academic exchanges between China and the West and promoting the development of the translation studies in contemporary China. The present translation project takes the second chapter with more than ten thousand Chinese characters in the book(2003)as its object of translation. The text of it is mainly concerned with the impressionistic approach to literary translation the author of the book proposes by drawing on traditional Chinese literary and artistic theory. In it the author clarifies the approach by summarizing ten major translating methods and illustrating them by examples. The text belongs to the category of non literary texts for the purpose of humanities, which displays some salient features:strong in objectivity, completeness, logicality, and argumentativeness;clear and academic in conveyance of ideas in language, and simple and concise in overall style. Its translation,on the whole, requires reproduction of these aspects of the original text. After her analysis of the original text and other relevant factors, the translatorformulated her basic translation principle and strategy, which are carried out by applying various methods on the different levels. She writes her translation report on the basis of her process of conducting the translation project. In her translating process, the translator sets up her main translation objective as follows: Her translation should retain as much as possible the Chinese original conceptual system, theoretical propositions, argumentations and overall style, and meanwhile should get as close as possible to the textual profile of an English publication in the field.Taking such as her cardinal translating principle, the translator employs the reproductive approach for her dominant translation strategy. As for the more literary colored parts in the original text, she consciously applies the impressionistic approach to their translation. On the lexical, syntactic, and textual level, she uses various translating methods to perform the linguistic transformation and affects her translation strategy. The translator strives to render her English version near the requirement for academic publication in English.By carrying out the project, the translator hopes that she can deepen her understanding of translation and foster her translating competence, and furthermore provides some materials for translation researchers and brings about some positive effect for the foreign transmission of Chinese translation scholars' research achievements.
