The Research On Dummy Word Syntax In Modern Chinese

Dummy word is an important subgroup of verbs in Mandarin Chinese, it isadhesive, semantic falsified, and make verbs or verbal composition as an object. Theusing of the dummy word enhances the action of the verb, highlights the initiativesemantic, and thus forms into a certain formal express. The paper mainly researchesthe structure of the dummy word. Basing on the present achievement and linguisticdata, this paper wants to give a comprehensive description of the lexical form andmake a fully explained of syntactic. The main achievements are having a clearunderstanding of dummy word through comparing with other special sentences andfinding an possible way to explain the forming of dummy word structure. As togrammars theories, it refers to structuralist grammar, valence grammar and others,following the connection of form and function, deductive and inductive approachand so on. This paper includes the following parts:Chapter one is the introduction of the whole paper. It consists of five parts, suchas the background, the summaries of the relevant achievement, the purpose andsignificance, the methods of research and the sources of the corpus. The details of theachievements make a relative target for our writing.Chapter two focus on lexical structure form of dummy word. Firstly it make abound of this word from perspectives of syntax, semantics and valence, then analyzedits characters from its connection with negative elements and others structure. We findthat this negative structure usually appeared in complex sentence. Finally wediscussed about the hierarchy of predicate part. The paper thinks that its verbalbecome weaker even lost when the dummy word and some adverbial retrench intoone word, thus some adverbial element can be appeared before or after the verb.Chapter three mainly refers to the comparison of sentence pattern. In the firstplace, the comparison of dummy word structure and the basic sentence, the formerpattern’s focus shifted to the action verb, thus the subsequent is changed either.Secondly, the comparison with the “ba (把)”sentence researches why dummy structure prefer to using preposition“dui”（对）rather than “ba”(把). Finally it alsocompares the dummy word structure and other predicative object sentence, findingthat dummy words are more closely binding with their verbs, we prefer taking them asan integral whole part.Chapter four analyzes the generative process of dummy word structure. From theperspective of the valence grammar, the paper thinks that the actual verb is the core ofthe syntactic structure. First the case frame of semantic structure forms into the basicsentence, and then highlights the actual verb through putting it into the object position.The dummy word makes the sentence more integrity. The formation of the sentence isa result of the pragmatics and syntax.Chapter five is the last part of this paper. It is summarized the main three content,including the works, the creative and the problems to be solved and so on.
