Drama "Chensan and Wuniang" is a local love-story developed out of the rich economical and cultural backgrounds in Chaozhou and Quanzhou Region, south of Mainland China. Popularity of "Chensan and Wuniang"even exceeded classic "Xixiangji" and "Liang zhu", two of the most classic and popular dramas in Chinese history. Drama is the extant oldest dissemination form of "Chensan and Wuniang", out of which five versions existed during Ming and Qing Dynasties. Current study focuses on the drama texts of "Chensan and Wuniang" during Ming and Qing Dynasties, and intends to disentangle relationships between the five versions of drama. It discusses development of the plots, character settings, aesthetics, and character depictions of all five versions of the drama, at the same time regional characteristics and cultural traditions reflected in the drama. The study also wants to investigate the reasons why "Chensan and Wuniang"survived among the folk, and became popular.
