Commumcation is an essential part in human history, and how to communicate, has long been a problem people want to solve. Communication needs an Intermediate force which can balance the difficulties produced by different cultural background. Foreign language translation is the act to eliminate cultural barriers, using language conversion. In visual language, symbol is to act as this role.Symbol is an important part in art and design. It also is one of the art forms and people communicate most ubiquitous and is essential in life. Symbol can communicate beyond language barriers, and it is closely related to human survival. Symbol interacts with people as it presence. Together with people, it experiences the precipitation of the times, and grows.In ancient times, people created symbols are mostly used to give own and tribal information, now, people create symbols for simple life application, illustrate the personality, and so on. From the beginning of human civilization to the rapid development of science and technology, symbol is always there, and in the different time background, the symbol of the form presents variety. It can be said, that the era influence symbol, symbol affects the era as well. The development of symbol reflects human civilization. Symbol also evolutes itself as pop culture develops. Most of the existing researches on the symbols remain in traditional symbols, trademarks evolution, logo design. They researched from the origin of the symbol to design aesthetic, but if we take another look at symbol, we will find that symbol is not just trademark, all kinds of graphics, and so on. Landmark, personality, popular vocabulary and other things which reflect contemporary life are contemporary "flag" symbol. It will be very interesting to research symbol using contemporary social phenomenon. This thesis is to research symbol on the aspect of imagery and feelings. Starting with watch, and as we watch, we try to find the symbol’s fate. We research many cultural symbols and will sum forms and types of contemporary symbols. We reflect and prospect the development of symbol, and came to a conclusion of the study of contemporary symbol.The innovation of this paper is that it avoids teaching style explanation. Contemporary symbol communicates with human feelings and the era in this paper. And we hope that this paper will contribute to the study of symbol and inspire people who are interested in symbol and push the development of symbol toward the right path.
