With the development of society and social competition, there are more and more psychological conflicts and behavioral problems with college students.Based on a large-scale questionnaire collected from4universies in Chongqing, This study investigated the mental health level and developmental characteristics of undergraduates by use of SCL-90and EPQ. Then, A2-year tracking investigation was carried out.The mental health and development characteristics of college students was researched and the effect of gender and family on mental health level was analyzed. In addition, the relationship between college students’ mental health and personality traits was discussed.The research included:(1)4,983college students from four universities in Chongqing were surveyed to analyze their mental health status.the effect of gender and family on mental health level and relationship between college students’ mental health and personality traits was analyzed.(2) the college students from four universities participated in2-year tracking survey that was designed to explore the developmental characteristics of college students’ mental health.The results indicated:(1) There was significant differences in gender and family of mental health of college students.(2) There was significant differences in gender and family of personality traits of college students. (3)There is a significant correlation between the personality traits and mental health of college students. Extroverted college students’ mental health was significantly higher than introverted students. Emotional stability bring great mental health.(4)the mental health of college students was improved with the grade rising. The development characteristics was different with gender, mental health level and personality traits.
