| The charm of classical Chinese poetry has attracted numerous readers and researchersfrom home and abroad. However, Chinese characters tend to express profound ideas withbrief words, and it is a common writing style of classical Chinese poetry to pursue impactbeauty. The characteristics of both Chinese characters and classical poetry make translation achallenging and rewarding task. Poetry translation is by no means a simple languagetransformation, which undertakes the mission of cultural communication. Wang Rongpei hasdone many excellent translations and reproduced the original poem style, because heendeavors to translate poem by poem with similar style and theme, while following thetranslation principle of “faithful in meaning and vivid in descriptionâ€.This thesis aims to study Wang Rongpei’s translation strategies and carries outresearches around the features of Wang’s translation strategies and the application of thefeatures of the translation strategies in his translation practice.Based on the above research questions, this thesis chooses The Book of Poetry, TheComplete Works of Tao Yuanming, Three Hundred Early Chinese Poems and Maple BridgeNight Mooring as research objects, and then makes comparison among Arthur Waley’s, JamesLegge’s, Burton Watson, Xu Yuanchong’s and Wang’s versions. By comparison, this thesisfinds out that Wang actually puts his translation strategies of verse for verse translation,transference of cultural imagery, faithful in meaning, and concentrating on reader’s feelinginto practice. The application of these translation strategies makes Wang’s versions faithful inmeaning and vivid in description. |
