As the Manipulation School shows, the translation process focuses more on the interrelation of culture and society rather than on the transfer and equivalence of words. The manipulation of the social and cultural factors, instead of the linguistic one, becomes, for the first time, the subject of the translation study. Numerous cultural factors are hidden behind the translation process, and some of them are greatly constrained by ideology. The individual person (author or translator) and social organization (press housing or censorship) will implant their respective interests into the works and translation. As a historical phenomenon, translation itself is the reflection of conflicts of various interests and values, while the translators often play the role of the meditator. When translating works, translators should reproduce the original ideology shown in the works as far as possible, and not put away the specific social context and modern readers’preference. The English historian Michael Heale wrote The American Anticommunism, which relates America’s domestic anticommunist campaigns from1830to1970. As a political biography, this book is ineluctability imprinted by the characteristics of the times, and affected by the author’s ideological thinking, which makes it a good research object concerning the ideological influence.By referring to the previous theories, the author of this thesis generalizes four kinds of source language that give expression to the influence of ideology, namely the purposive, differentiated, connotative and rhetorical ones. This thesis uses many examples to elaborate the influence of ideology during the translation process. In a word, ideology is inseparable from political works; translators should follow a certain kind of standard so as to complete the translation process successfully.
