Textual Characteristics From The Perspective Of Consecutive Interpreting And Simultaneous Interpreting

International exchanges occur every day in the world."Global village" matches the reality. No country can stay isolated from others. People speaking various languages contact one another frequently. In order to obtain information much easier and quicker than before, people need to bridge language gaps urgently. Countries from various backgrounds have different customs and cultures, which have an inevitable influence to languages and translated text. All kinds of languages need to be translated constantly, that is the base of communication. In response to the time’s call, interpreting is needed more than any time in history.Countless interpreting theories view language as a concrete system, not an abstract one. They are about the usage of language with the help of modern concepts. Interpreting is a communicative activity with certain purposes. A simple explanation of words is not enough to do its duty. Interpreting versions vary from language function, communicative purpose, audience and atmosphere. In interpreting from original language into target language, to tackle language barriers and achieve overall understanding, interpreters play a vital role in fulfilling the goal of communication. The textual characteristics of interpreting should not be ignored. International exchanges need corresponding interpreting strategies and standards according to different work styles. According to work style, there are two types of interpreting:consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. The former has longer sentences and rather complete grammar than the latter. The text is more precise and complicate with a feature of logic organization. Refined and readable texts are often seen in consecutive interpreting. While simultaneous interpreting is short, brief and simple to understand. It is quick to convey information and can save valuable time.This paper focuses on different textual characteristics of interpreted language in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. It is based on two selected interpreting materials. One is a speech on the fourth China (Hainan) ecological culture forum ("Rectify the Relationship between Human Being and the Nature"), which is interpreted from Chinese to English; and the other is "Charles Darwin University Proposes a Confucius Institute", which is interpreted from English to Chinese. Two pieces of materials are interpreted by consecutive and simultaneous interpreting respectively. The aim is to contrast the differences of textual characteristics with two interpreting methods.
