A Study Of The Relationship Between Work Motivation And Job Engagement Of Employees:the Mediating Effect Of The Meaning Of Work

The meaning of work emphasize that individuals feel that the job he or she engaged in is meaningful and valuable. Foreign studies showed that the meaning of work have continuous and significant impact on individual’s life, work and organization’s development. However, domestic studies about the meaning of work still in a fledging period, studies which draw the meaning of work as a mediator into the relationship between work motivation and job engagement is still less.Based on the view mentioned above, this study chooses400employees from Tianjin, Beijing, and Hebei province as participants, and uses Work Preference Inventory(WPI), The Work and Meaning Inventory(WAMI) and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale(UWES) as research tools to explore the relationship among work motivation, the meaning of work and job engagement, and also analyze the meditation effect of the meaning of work between the relationship between work motivation and job engagement. The conclusions are as follows.1)Intrinsic motivation and vigor, dedication, absorption are significantly positive correlated, extrinsic motivation and vigor are significantly negative correlated. intrinsic motivation can positively predict vigor, dedication, and absorption, extrinsic motivation can negatively predict vigor. In other words, staffs who have high intrinsic motivation also showed high level job engagement, staffs who have high extrinsic motivation showed low vigor of job engagement.2)Positive meaning is a partial mediator of the relationship between intrinsic motivation and vigor, intrinsic motivation and dedication, intrinsic motivation and absorption. Meaning-Making through work is a partial mediator of the relationship between intrinsic motivation and dedication, intrinsic motivation and absorption.
