Jia Zhangke, a leading figure of the “Sixth Generation”movement of Chinese cinema, is well known for his unique style ofcinematic narration. Starting from his personal life experience, hiskeen touch to life, Jia’s films can reflect a true picture of the lifestate and the spiritual outlook of the underclass figures in the socialtransformation period. Based on the movie narratology, this thesismade a careful arrangement and a profound analysis for Jia’s eightdrama moives. The following movies are included: Xiao Shan GoingHome,Xiao Wu, Platform, Unknown Pleasures,The World, StillLife,24City,A Touch of Sin. The analysis mainly talks about thenarrative content which condensed the“hometown” complex andthe anti-drama narrative pattern. And on this basis, this thesis alsoexplored the unique narrative discourse and the inner connection ofon-the-spot report style movie. This thesis can be divided into six subsections:the firstsubsection started from the topic selection, analyzed the presentsituation of the domestic and international academic research ofJia’s film works, and then determined my research direction and mythesis topic. The second subsection mainly discussed the strong“Hometown” Complex embodied in the narrative content of Jia’sfilms. In his films, by showing the daily life of some edge characters, Jia expresses his human compassion and sympathy for people livingin the underclass society. The third subsection of this thesisfocused on the analysis of anti-drama as the characteristicstructure of Jia’s film narrative. All the elements like the perplexingspace-time construction, non plot story structure, open ending of astory, helped show the rough texture of reality in Jia’s works.Thefourth subsection analyzed Jia’s unique narrative discourse--theintegrated use of rough and simple camera language endowed Jia’smovies with a unique style of documentary aesthetics. The fifthsubsection, this thesis analyzed the value and the meaning of thenarrative pattern in Jia Zhangke’s movies. The sixth subsection isthe conclusion of this thesis. To make a long story short, on the basis of in-depth collation andanalysis of Jia Zhangke’s film narrative style, the author has gaineda deeper understanding of Jia Zhangke’s narrative characteristics. At the same time, it is expected that this thesis would be ameaningful exploration in the narrative styles of Chinese movies.
