Zhangmu, a scholar major, has caused wide public concern, whohad made great achievements upon History and Geography ofNorthwest China in the late Qing Dynasty. However, his attainmentson calligraphy, Poetry and literature were neglected by latergenerations. This paper is aiming at repositioning his place in historyby reorganizing the literature.This paper could be divided into8parts. Part one is mainlyintroduction upon reasearch trends and meanings nowadays.Part two is a brief introduction of zhang’s lifetime and socialintercourse. By stating his lifetime including family property,officialcareer and social intercourse (mainly about his friendship with Qi, He,Cheng, Ruan), this part lays a foundation of Zhangmu’s reposition.Part three is mainly discussing about his History and Geography.work and his academic thoughts that facing the reality andhumanistic pragmatism. This part analyzes one of his major works, nomad and travel notes among Mongolia. Part four has paid attentionto his artistic merits upon literatrue and poetry. His erudition helpedhim to reach a further step especially on poetical accomplishments.His friendship with Qi and Cheng had became stories through the ages.Part five and part six differentiates zhangmu’s academic thinkingsand calligraphic thoughts, which aim at Analyzing formation reasonsof his notion. Part seven includes his calligraphy practice byanalyzing the style characteristic, origins Calligraphy values and hisspecific works, then draws a conclusion of major characteristicsamong zhang’s calligraphy. Part eight is the conclusion of this paperto summarize main idea above.
