Being romantic is the most significant characteristic of art song. Integrating with music, it displays a romantic artistic conception. Composers express their feelings through music by adopting artistic and composing techniques and highlighting accompaniments and lyrics and internalize the texts in music, which achieves the perfect performance of the integration of poetry and music. Art song was introduced to China by XIAO Youmei and ZHAO Yuanren during 1920s. It fused with Chinese ethnic elements and became mature after witnessing more than half century’s development and evolution.Songs of HUANAG Zi are stereotypes of art songs, representing art songs in Chinese contemporary musical history. Enjoying a distinguishing position in Chinese musical history, his works have large room for comprehension and deconstruct ion and are of great research values. HUANG was famous not only for being a composer but also music theorist and educator. He created a large number of works of different genres and art songs constituted an important part of his works.So far, the musical academic circles have yield considerable number of achievements in the research of HUANG and his works from the perspectives of music creation, aesthetics, harmony and accompaniment analysis.This thesis focuses on the study of the performing characteristics of three art songs of HUANG Zi, namely Spring Nostalgia, Reminiscence of Home, Three Wishes of a Rose, starting with the historical background, analyzing the influence of western music on HUANG’s creation. The thesis aims at exploring for the artistic and ideological values of the three songs. The artistic spirits embodied in these three songs are identical to HUANG’ s musical pursuit. This thesis is expected to dig in HUANG’s art songs from the perspectives of emotional engagement, emotional experience and character shaping, revealing HUANG Zi’s world of musical aesthetics, explaining his musical thoughts and comprehending his musical techniques. Emphasizing on the multiple performance possibilities, this thesis aims to provide a theoretical basis for the better performance of HUANG Zi’ s art songs together with a theoretical guarantee to the accurate, vivid and perfect performance of art songs during the learning process of vocal arts. It is also expected to provide useful lessons for music practitioners and researchers.
