Study On Translation Of Intertextual Signs In Huangdi Neijing From Perspective Of Intertextuality Theory

An intertextual sign is a combination of many elements that may cause interaction with other signs within or outside its own system. There are a large number of intertextual signs in Chinese medical classics, which are rich in cultural connotations. Take Huangdi Neijing as an example, in which there are four categories of intertextual signs, namely name sign, philosophy sign, ancient Chinese sign and TCM sign. These intertextual signs can not only enrich the text but also play a significant role in comprehensive understanding and interpreting of the texts.The theory of intertextuality has an important guiding significance on translation study. Four steps are explained including identifying, interpreting, transferring intertextual signs and recontextualization, providing a reliable basis for translation.In this study, the intertextual signs in Huangdi Neijing are mainly analyzed by following methods:1.marking the former 200 intertextual signs and their corresponding translations in previous 34 chapters by hand; 2.establishing miniature bilingual parallel corpus for intertextual signs in person; 3.contrasting and analyzing the readability of both versions; 4.analyzing the translation strategies of intertextual signs, using the theory of intertextuality to expound the process of translation and mention a corresponding translation mode.By contrasting and analyzing English translations of intertextual signs in both versions, the author finds that both translators mainly adopt such methods as literal translation, omitting translation, transliteration, free translation, adding translation and variation translation. Besides, there are more mistranslations in Veith’work than those in Li’s, but the former shows more fluency in language and more consistency in cohesion. In terms of being faithful to the original content, the latter has stronger readability; but the former is better from the perspective of language. According to the theory of intertextuality, the author believes that in the process of intertextual signs a translator should manage the translation by the following steps:1. A translator has to accurately identify intertextual signs in a text.2. The translator explains and interprets the meaning of intertextual signs of source language, including the content, rhetoric and language style.3. The translator transforms the source language into corresponding target language.4. The original context is showed in target language by compensating and adjusting the corresponding intertextual signs.This study researches the former 200 intertextual signs in Huangdi Neijing and the corresponding translation versions in the hope of establishing a theoretical mode for Chinese medical classic translation from the perspective of the theory of intertextuality.
