A Study Of The Evolution Of The Idea Of Truth In Cezanne’s Painting:from The Series Of "Montagne Sainte-Victoire"

Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) is on behalf of the post-impressionism painter who is regarded as the "father of modern painting". He make research diligently in order to explore the essence truth of natural continuously. The forms of artistic performance which Cezanne has found with his lifelong hard exploration demonstrate solid and durable sense of eternal and promote some prospects which have infinite possibility. Especially, series of "Montagne Sainte-Victoire" which are the culmination of Cezanne’s art of painting are the crystallization of Cezanne’s lifetime to explore the essence truth of nature, and realize the satisfactory of "parallel and harmony with the nature" which is Cezanne’s persistent pursuit in the art of painting. Montagne Sainte-Victoire which is the repeated motif in Cezanne’s painting has become a "Promised Land" of Cezanne’s heart. In each important turning period, Montagne Sainte-Victoire always resides in the his painting works which never be forgotten and never disappear in his painting. Thus the Montagne Sainte-Victoire become the main clue to research Cezanne. In this thesis, we will analyze the real view of Cezanne’s painting respectively from the four period which is the style formation of Cezanne’s painting according to the clues of "Montagne Sainte-Victoire" in order to study the coherence and consistency about Cezanne pursuing the truth in painting arts. The main contents are as follows:(1) Analysis that the idea of truth in Cezanne’s painting has budded in his early. The purpose of he learning the painting way of romantic is to realize the pursuit of solid texture eternal which exiting in classical. From the early Cezanne’s painting style, he was already showed to the sensitive quality of structure and color. However, he still be in a struggling state of explore truth because he could not combine the passion of romantic and the eternity of classical, but he never gave up. At this period, Montagne Sainte-Victoire has appeared in Cezanne’s painting works, but it is just as the background and medium to convey his emotion and mood and it does not show anything about the eternal feel of strong and persistent.(2) Analysis that the idea of truth in Cezanne’s painting had some breakthrough in his impressionist period. He learned to working way of observe the natural by joining impressionist. From Cezanne’s painting style in his impressionist period, he was keeping the quality of rigorous structure and the use of color. However, he only see the presentative truth nature because the impressionist painting depicts the light which will change instantly. So he began to explore the essence truth of nature. At this period, Cezanne had discovered the beauty of Montagne Sainte-Victoire, but the flashing light and atmospheric flows damaged the texture of solid and durable in Cezanne’s painting.(3) Analysis that the idea of truth in Cezanne’s painting had been implemented in style formation period. He unified the nature in a certain order through the analysis of rational thinking and the abstraction and simplify about the natural. From Cezanne’s painting style in this period, he display the deep layers of space by using the cascade form and color contrast, and this kind of space is tend to more and more flatten. At this period, Cezanne’s paints of Montagne Sainte-Victoire had already conveyed the everlasting throb, but he is still not satisfied and continue to research and analysis the understanding of truth and the expression of the eternal.(4) Analysis that the idea of truth in Cezanne’s painting had further development in Cezanne’s old age period. He further unify each elements of painting through the more in-depth thinking about the nature and abstract and stripping the elements of affecting texture. From Cezanne’s painting style in old age period, he mainly used color to show the form and space, and the Montagne Sainte-Victoire has become impossible to identify in his paintings. So the truth and the eternal which he expressed had became more intuitive and universal. However, Cezanne is still explore the truth persistently and still make the research and thinking about the truth until the end of the life.
