Mind Mapping, also called mental mapping, it is an effective graphic tool which not only can guide and extend the thinking process, but also be able to record this process and create a clear visual expression of it. This will be favorable to build learners’own knowledge networks as well as provide a platform for the communication of knowledge and information between individuals.The present study attempts to apply Mind Mapping into English reading teaching for the purpose of improving reading effectiveness. It first reviews literature on Mind Mapping and English reading both abroad and in China. Then with the theories of constructivism and knowledge visualization serving as the guideline, the thesis constructs an effective English reading mapping model. Moreover, followed by reading comprehension tests, questionnaires and interviews, the experimental data are gained to examine the prediction on reading effects.This experimental research selects two parallel classes, totally 80 freshmen in Beijing University of Agriculture as subjects, lasting nearly ten months. The teacher still adopts the traditional teaching method:language analysis in control class, meanwhile English reading mapping method is used in experimental class, that is: taking the text analysis as main form, supplemented by language analysis. Finally, by SPSS 16.0 for windows, the significant results for reading interest, comprehension ability and strategies are obtained from the experimental class who apply the Mind Mapping in English reading course compared with the control class who are taught by the traditional method.The results are as follows:from the perspective of students, they become the principal part in English reading class. The special English reading model can enhance students’reading accuracy and memorization of text and cultivate their learning interests, cooperative and autonomous learning competence. Besides, from the perspective of teacher, Mind Mapping can update her teaching thoughts and creativity. The factors that may influence the application and development of English reading mapping are achieved, including the amount of students’self-learning time, the class size and time and the proficiency standards of using Mind Mapping.Out of the limitations for the present study, suggestions for further studies are put forward.
