The Research On Xiangxi Paper Craft Under The Influence Of Wu-nuo Culture

Wu-Nuo Culture is rooted only in China. It is an important part of folk culture in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province.Thus, the national intangible culture heritage Xiangxi paper craft, which emerged under this background, also has strong regional cultural features. Its development relies on Wu-Nuo folk activities,and also it shows local people’s values and ascetic perception. However, Xinagxi paper craft faces the problem of being lost as the industrialization getting momentum recently.Consequently, it is an urgent duty to protect, inherit and develop minorities’traditional crafts.Based on the background of Wu-Nuo culture and the author has referred to the literature on relevant subjects and employed many research methods, including fieldwork and systematic analysis. To further study this research in-depth,the author has experienced learning the artistry of paper craft from Nie Fangjun, a national intangible culture heritage inheritor, and many other folk culture researchers.At the beginning of this paper are the introduction about the local culture ecological backgrounds that Wu culture, Nuo culture, Wu-Nuo culture and Xiangxi Wu-Nuo culture had emerged and developed respectively, and the introduction about the specific manifestation pattern.Then the author points out the existed safeguards and current problems of Xiangxi paper craft;afterwards emphatically analyzed the Wu-Nuo culture’s effects on Xiangxi paper craft in aspects of model, color and production process. Also,the production process of Xiangxi paper craft is firstly distributed into five stages:materials selection;materials-bound;paper-pasted;colored painting and assembly.And the author makes an illustrated record of the technological process, so as to provide a theory to depend on for the inheritance and development of this brilliant folk craft. Next part is the analysis of some specific applications of redeeming vows to Nuo god,funeral activities,Tima ceremony of Xiangxi paper craftsmanship in local Wu-Nuo folk activities.Finally, the author puts forward some rational proposal that sets up a museum of Xiangxi paper craft and industrializes the tourism of Xiangxi paper craft.Simultaneously,the activities of creative and functional design of paper craft are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of this method and seek the potential market of paper craft.
