Optical illusion is one distinctive visual phenomenon, whichcould trigger people’s psychological association by stimulatingpeople’s visual sense. Optical illusion exists in the surroundingenvironment of our usual life and this phenomenon has been widelyutilized. Optical illusion can bring unexpected extraordinary visualeffects to graphic design works by increasing the aesthetics of theart works and enhancing audience feelings at the same time.Understanding the basic principles of optical illusion, we canminimize its negative impacts and better apply it into graphicdesign. Therefore, the research into optical illusion is of greatvalue.Firstly, based on historical background and research status, theliterature review of this topic is discussed.This is followed the analysis of optical illusion phenomenonfrom nature and daily life, indicating that this is a commonphenomenon around our life.In the third section about basic theory research, optical illusion phenomenon and its causes are explained in detail.Then, the types of optical illusion are summarized and thediversity of its forms in design application is illustrated.In the fifth and sixth section, the features regarding opticalillusion’s applications will be analyzed with the study of real worksfrom masters.Thirdly, the impacts brought by optical illusion on graphicdesign will be illustrated as well.Finally, it is illustrated how to fix optical illusion and how toutilize optical illusion to enhance expression, simplify graphics andbetter create the sense of space.
