Gustav·Mahler is one of the most important musicians at the end of the19th and the beginning of the20th century. The majority of his works are symphonies and vocal music works. The thesis takes Mahler’s Symphony No.l, Symphony No.2and Symphony No.3as examples, and analyzes them from the perspectives of form, meaning and Mahler’s personal experience.Under the guidance of Schopenhauer’s"Will" and"Representation" and Nietzsche’s "Overman","Apollonian spirit" and"Dionysiac spirit", the thesis comes to the conclusion that Mahler’s works are considerably influenced by Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. The first chapter presents a literature review of the studies on Mahler at home and abroad. The second chapter gives a brief introduction to Schopenhauer’s and Nietzsche’s ideology, which focuses on Schopenhauer’s "Will" and "Representation" in The World as Will and Representation, and Nietzsche’s "Superman" in Thus Spoke Zarathustra,"Apollonian spirit","Dionysiac spirit"and"Tragedy" in The Birth of Tragedy. Through detailed analyses of the musical properties of Mahler’s Symphony No.1, Symphony No.2and Symphony No.3,the third and the fourth chapters delve into their inner meanings. The fifth chapter is the core of the thesis. The writer respectively discusses Schopenhauer’s and Nietzsche’s ideology contained in these three symphonies, and reveals the special relationship between Thus Spoke Zarathustra and the Symphony No.3, and finally connects the meanings of Mahler’s three symphonies with Schopenhauer’s and Nietzsche’s similar"pessimism,"reflecting the significant influence of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche on Mahler in the early stages of his creation.
