Selected E-C Translation Of Titian, His Life And A Critical Commentary

The translation material of this project is selected from Titian, His Life, written by Sheila Hale. This book includes five chapters all together, arranged in time order. The third part "The Most Powerful Ruler in the World" and the fourth part "The Venus of Urbino" of Chapter III are chosen as original text. The third part mainly introduces the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Titian’s meeting with the emperor Charles V would be a determining event in his life, which rapidly makes him became the principal painter of the imperial court. The fourth part presents one of Titian’s famous painting " Venus of Urbino".The translator finds these translation difficulties as follows:Firstly, a number of professional terms and special backgrounds exist in the original text, lots of searching work should be done to clear these obstacles. Secondly, long complex sentences are frequently used in the original text. Some of them contain several clauses which interact mutually, which may bring misunderstanding.The project is divided into two parts:The first part is translation. Functional equivalence can be expected to be achieved in the process of translating by using lexical translation strategies as well as syntactic translation strategies. The second part is translation report. This report mainly focuses on the translation difficulties during the translation process and the solutions to those problems.The significances of this project are as follows:Firstly, translating one’s biography is the best way to introduce him/her to people. This project will open a door for readers to learn Titian’s life and Venetian school. Besides, the selected part introduces mainly the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and his historical background. Studying history is one of the important reasons for people to progress. What’s more, the translator presents translation experiences of biographical literature, in hope of helping other translators who translate similar literary form.
