Cohesion refers to the relationship of meaning that exists within the text. It's indispensable for the building of a system of a language, the understanding of a text and an efficient communication.Cohesion exists in both English and Chinese language.Meanwhile,English and Chinese are two different languages with diverse culture and customs, ways of thinking and linguistic structures, and thus the cohesion in English may also be different with the cohesion in Chinese. In order to translate English into Chinese, translators need to have a exhaustive understanding of the cohesion in both languages, and try to use cohesive devices properly to produce concise and fluent translations. Many linguists have already done a lot of work on cohesion study. This thesis will analyze the translation of Bill Bryson's African Diary based on the theories proposed by Halliday,Hason,Hu Zhuanglin and Zhu Yongsheng, and try to discuss the usages and differences of cohesions in English and Chinese based on five aspects, namely the reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. This thesis comes to the conclusion that strategies like keeping the cohesive devices, changing the cohesive devices and changing the device are frequently used in E-C translation practice. |
