Science and technology have gained strong momentum since the 21^st century especially in the fields of big data,nanotechnology,machine learning and so on.Machine learning,as one of the most important disciplinary fields of artificial intelligence,has seen remarkable and rapid development in recent years,shaping the way that people work in a great extent.At the same time,English documents about machine learning have cropped up,drawing great attention from the world.This is a report on the translation of excerpts of Machine Learning.As the EST?English for Science and Technology?text,this book with complex yet well-organized sentences and logical structure boasts unique features at textual level.In Machine Learning,grammatical cohesive devices,most of which are reference and conjunction,are frequently used to ensure the text is rendered more structurally.However,cohesive devices differ greatly between English and Chinese,making it harder to find the equivalent expression in translation.As cohesive devices get translated,a major challenge facing the translator is to make the target text more coherent.In this report,under the guidance of Cohesion Theory put forward by Halliday and Hasan,the translator mainly elaborates on the grammatical cohesive devices used in Machine Learning,and focuses on the translation of reference and conjunction with specific examples in case analysis.Some translation methods are summarized accordingly for coherence by taking into account the similarities and differences between English and Chinese.Translation methods of reference include:?1?omission of personal reference;?2?repetition of the referential object;?3?shifting of demonstrative and personal reference;?4?addition of category words;?5?verbal substitution of comparative reference.Translation methods of conjunction include:?1?explicitation of the implicit conjunction;?2?preservation of the explicit conjunction.
