A Report On The Chinese Translation Of-ly Adverbs In Commercial Ship Collision Investigation Reports

Most adverbs in English ending with the suffix "-ly" are widely used and characterized by their high frequency and rich connotation. When being translated, it is particularly difficult to find the proper method to make the translation fluent and elegant Therefore, accurately translating-ly adverbs in accordance with the real context is a great challenge.Maritime accident investigation reports are to determine the circumstances and the causes with the aim of improving the safety of life at sea and the avoidance of the accidents in the future. It is required to be expressed accurately and precisely. When translating collision investigation report, it shows that adverbs are used in high frequency with changeful connotations, and they can be differently positioned in a sentence, which definitely causes confusion and barrier for correctly understanding the meaning of the sentences and contexts. Among those adverbs,-ly adverbs show higher frequncy than any other adverbs. The Maritime accident investigation report, as a formal, precisely expressed, and informational text, also requires to be translated accurately and faithfully. Hence, by analyzing semantic characteristics of-ly adverbs, specific location in English sentences, functions of different positions, and the change of location in Chinese sentences, this thesis discusses the translation methods of-ly adverbs, such as syntactic linearity, inversion, conversion, division, back translation, keep the original meaning, and the change of the meanings caused by change of the position, which can accurately convey the information of the report and also provide efficient translation methods in the translation of maritime accident investigation report.
