Readability is the understanding ease for readers while they read texts. The study of readability has started since the early 20th century. Efficient reading is all about readability- what makes some texts easier to read than others. Readability, especially readability formulas have been used in numerous fields such as scientific research and study, government works, teaching and education, publishing business, the military, medicine and medical science, and commercial business. Even courts accept their use in testimony. Many people, and in many languages, have benefited from this. On the other side, as a large shipping country in the world, the requirements for the maritime English skills of related personnel are more strict, hence, the study for readability of maritime English literatures is very necessary.And this paper aims to investigate the readability level of maritime English by comparing it with general English from lexical, syntactic and readability formula aspects..Results show that on lexical level, texts from maritime English have closer levels of readability to the texts from leisure, arts, belief and commerce domains, and have significant differences with texts from other domains. On syntactic level, texts from maritime English have closer levels of readability to the texts from arts, belief and world affairs domains, and have significant differences with texts from other domains. According to the readability formulas, texts from maritime English have closer levels of readability to the texts from arts, belief and leisure domains. In general, maritime English has many similar characteristics with general English for arts, belief and leisure.The analysis of this paper proves to be useful for maritime English teaching for teachers and gives a targeted practicing method for improving students’professional skills on maritime English by enhancing their masteries on vocabulary, sentences and reading comprehension.
