It is of great benefit to the teaching and learning of a language to choose books suitable for the reading level of the reader. In terms of teaching Chinese as a second language, there are very few research results or optional grading readings.Readability formula is one of the ways to grade reading materials.Existing formulas have not been fully tested in practice. Therefore,in order to really apply it to the teaching of Chinese as a second language,it must pass the test of enough samples.Based on the teaching of Chinese as a second language, this paper takes readability formula as a tool, quantitative analysis as a method, and Graded Readers for Chinese Language Learners as samples to measure readability of reading materials by using two sets of readability formulas.By comparing the two formulas, this paper explores the scientific nature of reading material classification and discusses the related issues of classification standards. The two sets of formulas were proposed by Lei Wang(2005)and Wanghao Guo(2010)respectively.This paper innovates the research paradigm, provides corpus for the improvement of readability formula, and tests the practicability of the readability formula.Through analysis and discussion, when using Lei Wang's formula, some restrictions should be added in addition to the scope of application mentioned by the author..For example, formulas do not apply to longer text. Therefore, the validity of the readability score and readability level table based on Lei Wang's formula is debatable.Wanghao Guo's formula can predict the readability of long text.Through the determination of Wanghao Guo's formula, the classification of three levels of Graded Readers for Chinese Language Learners conforms to the basic requirements from easy to difficult. If 80% is the standard value to determine the level, then the three levels of readings correspond to levels 3,4 and 5 in the International Curriculum for Chinese Language Education.According to the readability score, the readability of reading material can be preliminarily judged, and then the relative difficulty level of reading material can be determined. For teaching Chinese as a second language, reference should be made to the standards given in the syllabus.By comparing the Chinese characters list and the word list, establishing a connection between the readings and the syllabus. Then determining the absolute level of difficulty and giving the reading suggestions. The grading criteria need to be based on readability scores and consider the effects of coefficient of variation and extremum on the hierarchy range.
