A Discussion On Examples Of Terminology Translation A Reflection On Translating A Dissertation In Finance

With the process of globalization and the increase in China’s exchanges in the field of finance with foreign countries, translation has got a very important place, and also makes a great contribution to the development of China’s finance. A lot of Chinese academic works in economics have been translated into English, which is beneficial for scholars throughout the world to do academic research on finance of China, but the improperness, ambiguity and inaccuracy of the terminology translation directly or indirectly lead to some deviations in comprehending the Chinese financial terminologies. Therefore, it is very necessary to standardize the C-E translation of terminology in the finance field.In order to study the standard of the terminology in finance,this author translated from Chinese into English an doctoral dissertation titled“中国资本项目可兑换进程中的风险评估与金融安全研究”(A Study on Risk Assessment and Financial Security in Process of China’s Capital Account Convertibility),which is a research on the issue of implementing capital account convertibility for China.In translating the dissertation, this author met with many problems and challenges because on one hand, some Chinese terminologies lack of equivalent expressions in English, on the other hand, some finance terminologies are originated from English, so that it is hard to put them back to their original concepts in English. This thesis aims to take some of such terminologies as examples and study on them based on the theory of terminology, so as to make the translation of them more standardized and theorized.In this thesis, Chapter 1 is a brief introduction of the translation project and the rationale of topic selection for this thesis. Chapter 2 reviews the previous research on the translation of terminology to set up the theoretical framework for the thesis. Chapter 3 is the main part of the thesis, which discusses on examples of the financial terminologies with their translation changes, trying to analyze the original concepts of them. Chapter 4 summarizes the translation project and the thesis and makes some suggestions for translators in the field of finance.
