A Contrastive Analysis Of Chinese Mainland And Taiwan’s Subtitle Translation Of Frozen

With the process of globalization and the development of economy, cross-cultural communication is getting frequent. At the same time, more and more foreign audiovisual works come into Chinese market. As an important branch of translation, audiovisual translation plays a crucial role in promoting cultural exchanges. Successful film translation can help present the films to the audience as they originally are and meet the communication needs of the audience. Taking the Adaption Theory as the theoretical basis, this thesis analyzes the differences of Mandarin used in Chinese mainland and Taiwan in the subtitle translation of the film Frozen. The author reveals that in the process of film translation, the translators of both sides, in making choices of language use, adapt their versions to the target audience’s language habits and regional cultures.In terms of language habits, three aspects are covered:vocabulary, syntax, and language style. The adaptation of vocabulary level contains the aspects of proper nouns, measure words and words that have variant forms. The adaptation of syntax level contains the aspects of multi-language integration, grammar rules and four-character structure. The adaptation of language style level contains aspects of diction and modal particle. The adaptation of regional culture means the cultures in Chinese’s Mainland and Taiwan have their own characteristics. This thesis points out the language and culture differences across the Straits in the hope of giving some practical guidance to translators of both sides.
