Relationship Among Alcohol Expectancy, Coping Style And Drinking Behaviors In College School Students

Objective To explore the relationship and the interaction mechanism between alcohol expectancy,coping style and drinking behaviors in college school students.Methods With the convenient sampling,905 college school students were questioned with Alcohol Expectancy Scale for College Students(AES-CS),Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire(SCSQ)and The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test(AUDIT).Results (1)AES-CS has two subscals, the inner consistency reliability are 0.910and 0.852,the split-half reliability are 0.828 and 0.745, Correlations of factors in Alcohol expectancy subscal is from 0.550 to 0.608,Correlations of the factors and the subscales is from 0.788 to 0.850; Correlations of factors in Negative alcohol expectancy subscal is from 0.246 to 0.492,Correlations of the factors and the subscales is from 0.682 to 0.790;(2)Significant differences existed between genders, different grades and subjects in total of AES-CS.Significant differences existed between genders, different grades and only child in total of SCSQ,the total average score of college students’ drinking behavior is 5.19,Significant differences existed between genders,environment and only child in total of AUDIT. (3) Significant correlations in college students’alcohol expectancy,coping style and drinking behaviors.The path analysis results showed positive alcohol expectancy is a mediator variable betweennegative coping and drinking behavior,The path analysis showed,negative coping style is the significant predictors of social expectations,the path coefficient is 0.146; negative coping style is the significant predictors of relaxexpectations, the path coefficient is 0.205; negative coping style and social expectation, relaxation expectation are the significant predictors of drinking behaviour, the path coefficient was 0.132,0.313 and 0.287. The results showed positive alcohol expectancy is a mediator variable between negative coping and drinking behavior;Conclusion Alcohol Expectancy Scale for College Students(AES-CS) showed good qualities of psychometrics in inner consistency reliability, split-half reliability, content validity, construction validity, criterion validity and empirical validity.College students’ drinking behavior should receive more attention.college students’ coping style has an effect on individual alcohol expectancy and drinking behaviors,and one’s alcohol expectancy has an effect on drinking behaviors; Negative coping style can have a direct effect on drinking behavior, and can also affect drinking behaviors through the alcohol expectancy.
