This is a project report on translation of “ The prestige of writing: 文, letter, picture, image, ideography” in Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China. For western sinologists and sinology enthusiasts, the book provides them a way to understand China and Chinese language and writing. Meanwhile, it builds the bridge of spreading Chinese culture to western countries. It is of guiding significance to translate the book, contributing to convey the author’s understanding of Chinese culture as well as play the role of translation activity itself, namely exchanging culture and ideas. The report is composed of six parts: introduction, background information, preparations for translation, theoretical basis, difficult points in translation and summary of translation practice. Based on the functional equivalence theory, the report mainly analyzes difficulties in translation from three aspects: vocabulary, sentence and cultural aspects. Difficulties in vocabulary aspect are handled by choice of words and transliteration; difficulties in sentence are analyzed from the aspect of dealing with long sentences and amplification; specific cultural knowledge is employed to solve difficulties in cultural aspect as examples, further dealing with difficulties in this paper.
