This is a translation practice report, the source text of which is excerpted from Chapter Four and Chapter Five of Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China. The author distinguishes the differences between Chinese and western languages from western perspectives, which facilitate Sinologists in the West and bridge the cross culture communication between China and western countries.It is of guiding significance to translate the book, which helps to convey the author’s understanding in the study of Chinese culture and spread Chinese culture.The report is composed of five parts, namely translation description, the process of translation, the choice of translation theory and strategy, translation techniques and case analysis, the revision after translation and summary of translation practice. The translation is based on Eugene A Nida’s theory of functional equivalence. The source text is a conference proceedings. According to Peter Newmark’s text categorization, this text is classified as information-oriented, thus the translator adopts the strategies of communicative translation. The first part of the report briefly introduces the background information, the goals and the significance of translation; The second part mainly describes the preparations before translation and the work after translation, which mainly focuses on the record of preparations and the modification and examination during the process of translation; The third part mainly analyses the theory, strategies and methods adopted in this translation practice; The fourth part analyses the difficult points in vocabulary, sentences and culture, combined with translation instances. In terms of vocabulary, amplification, conversation and the use of Chinese four-character idoms are adopted. In sentence translation, sentence division and word order adjustment are adopted. As for the cultural aspect, the strategy of communicative are adopted; The last part is a summary of translation experiences and lessons gained from the practice.
