Berg’s violin concerto is widely recognized as one of his outstanding works in the early 20 th century. This paper is organized into two parts resembling the structure of the work. The first part of it as well as second part is studied comprehensively. In the first part, musical forms and twelve-tone technique are analyzed in macroscopic view in order to master the whole composition. In the second part, the motivation distribution of the whole music is presented and the performing method of dominant motivation is designed,for the purpose of recovering the whole work in detail.Special double mirror structure of Berg’s violin concerto is described in the first section of first part. Also,musical elements and idea are discussed in this section. The last of the section is an example of empty string motivation to reveal fatalism implied by Berg’s works. In the second section of first part,the composing technique of twelve tone sequence is elaborated,which is employed in the violin concerto to conceive three unique sequence designs. The following is three different kind of composing method applied in sequence design. The final of the section is used to probe the author’s romantic feelings through his composing methods.In the first section of second part, all motivation distributions appearing in the whole concerto is presented during solo and band performance. The relation between solo part and band part is brought to light with the development of motivation progress. The second section of this part is to discover how structured proneness play its role on motivation distribution as music proceeds. Based on character-oriented trait,the design of performing methods at different stages is accomplished.
