Because of the imbalance of physical and mental development, middle school students are prone to a variety of psychological problems such as social anxiety. Social anxiety severely affect the lives and learning of middle school students, so this study analyzes the relationship between personality, affiliation motivation and social anxiety of middle school students to provide a theoretical basis for solving the problem of the students’ social anxiety.This study picks the middle school students in Shijiazhuang as research objects and uses the fifth students personality questionnaire, affiliation motivation scale, adolescent social anxiety scale as research tools. 500 questionnaires are issued, of which 451 are valid. Data is analyzed by SPSSl5.0. The results are as following:(1) In extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness dimensions, urban middle school students score significantly higher than rural students, and only children score significantly higher than non-only children. In extraversion and conscientiousness dimensions, there exist grade differences.(2)In affiliation motivation, urban middle school students score significantly higher than rural middle school students. Only children score significantly higher than non-only children.(3) In social anxiety and each dimension of social anxiety, boys score significantly higher than girls. In the general situation dimension, non-only children score significantly higher than only children.(4)Extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness are negatively related to social anxiety. Neuroticism is positively related to social anxiety. Extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness are positively related to affiliation motivation. Neuroticism is negatively related to affiliation motivation. Affiliation motivation is negatively related to social anxiety.(5)Affiliation motivation could completely mediate the effect of extraversion, conscientiousness and openness on social anxiety. Affiliation motivation could partially mediate the effect of neuroticism on social anxiety.
