AbstractFalse Memory refers to the misled statement of some words or something that does not be exhibited or have never happened before. In the laboratory, mainly DRM paradigm induces the false memory. Directed Forgetting is a kind of conscious forgetting towards the material that requires to be forgo ten, which requires conscious participations, and emphasizing the point of direction and intention. The word method is a major paradigm to research directed forgetting. The study will combine directed forgetting with false memory, and control the activation levels under the influence of Directed forgetting and the elements of the whole scene, from an encoding perspective to explore the impact of the false memory with DRM paradigm, and explore its inherent impact mechanisms.This study includes three experiments. In the experiment one, select 40 undergraduate students in Hebei University. The study is in the list of directed forgetting of single word method, adding the concept of processing level, investigating the influence of the activation level about intensive and surface processing for the directed forgetting projects to the correct recognition of TBR and TBF words and error recognition of key induce words. In the experiment two, select 41 undergraduate students in Hebei University. The study is under the condition that the words list length remains unchanged. Through change the quantity of TBR and TBF words, investigate the influence of the different activation level of R and F for the same nature activation level to false memory in the directed forgetting projects. In the experiment two, the whole scene may be the confounding variables, affecting the experiment results. So, in the experiment three, select 40 undergraduate students in Hebei University. Controlling the factor of whole scene, the purpose is to investigate whether the whole scene can affect the false memory in the directed forgetting projects, aiming to have a more reasonable explanation for the result of experiment two.The following conclusions were obtained through experimental study:(1)The processing level of directed forgetting projects has impact on the false memories about key lure words under directed forgetting, and the performance is that the false memories of intensive processing groups were significantly higher than the surface processing groups’. It appears the directed forgetting in the intensive processing groups, however, in the surface processing group, the directed forgetting disappears.(2)The changes on quantity of TBR and TBF in words table can affect the false memories, and the performance is that the false recognition rate on the key lure words reduced significantly, with the increase of projects asked forget.(3)The whole scene has no effect on false memories under the directed forgetting of single word method.In short, it can reduce the quantity of false memories effectively through change the processing level of the directed forgetting items and quantity of remember and forget projects. The results can be explained by the selective coding theory of directed forgetting and the memory error implicit activation response hypothesis.
