Overseas Chinese Social Construction: Research On Penang Han Jiang Fraternity(1931-1961)

This thesis considered Penang Han Jiang Fraternity to be my study object, by taking research on the articles of association for fraternity, meeting records, revenue and expenditure accounts and so on, this paper combed the development vein of fraternity from set up to close, then it discussed the institutionalized process of Penang Teochew mutual assistance tradition. on this basis, it tried to reflect the problems of construction and integration for Penang Chinese society through the perspective of Penang Teochew institutionalized mutual assistance.Full text was divided into three parts : introduction, main body and conclusion. After discussed the social and historical background and fraternity’s development course of mutual aid’s establishment for Han Jiang, the main body part mainly discussed two aspects of content: one is the institutionalized problems of Penang hipsters and mutual assistance tradition. This part’s main content began with the formulation and modification of the articles for association, which tried to parse the fraternity’s institutional construction and improvement; The other is the problems of construction for Penang Chinese society. This part is explained through the analysis of Teochew mutual assistance institutionalized how to affect Penang Chinese community relations.In this paper, researches show that the institutional construction of mutual assistance organization was preliminary finished until the establishment of Han Jiang societies in 1931. During that period, Penang hipsters’ mutual assistance successively experienced wiese province gang, Penang Teochew, Penang Han Jiang river after the execution of community development. In 1953, Han Jiang fraternity modified its articles of association the second time, at that time, it finally realized the mutual institutionalized. Meanwhile, Penang Teochew mutual traditional institutionalized construction was closely associated with the integration of ethnic groups. Among this, there is a Penang Teochew community integration within itself, and also a hipster ethnic fusion with other dialect. Under this influence, Han Jiang fraternity ranged from Penang Teochew to the whole Chinese people in Malaya. Thus, we can see the gradually construction process of Chinese society in Penang from the perspective of the evolution of Penang Teochew mutual assistance organizations.
