This paper is a translation report and its selected material is the first five chapters of the novel The Racketeer. This novel is a legal thriller and written by John Grisham, a well-known American best-selling legal suspense novelist. It mainly tells the story of how the hero, Malcolm Bannister, who is serving a sentence in the federal prison, gets free in the end by playing the trump card—he knows who the murders are and for what reason they murdered the federal judge Raymond Fawcett. The novel is full of suspense and local flavor. It is written in a lively style and its plot twists and turns. Moreover, it will provide its readers with a relatively deep understanding of the America legal and penal system.Since its publication, it has frequently appeared on the best-selling list of “The New York Times”, “USA Today” and “The Washington Post”. This novel consists of 44 chapters and its first five chapters have been selected for the translation task by the author of this paper, the Chinese version of which amounts to 23507 Chinese characters.The content of this report is mainly divided into the following five chapters.The first chapter is task description. It includes a brief introduction to the author and the novel, the reasons of selecting the novel, the objectives of the project and the structure of the report.The second chapter is process description. It covers the pre-translation preparation, the translation process and the post-translation work.The third chapter is the introduction of the theoretical basis and translation skills. It presents the Skopos Theory applied in the practice and the translation skills under its guidance, such as Conversion, Amplification, Synthesis and so on.The fourth chapter is the case analysis. In this part, the original text has been analyzed mainly from the lexical level and syntactic level.The fifth chapter is the conclusion. It summarizes the experiences and lessons obtained by the translator in the translation process as well as the problems to be solved.
