Taking the translation of the novel The Sense of an Ending as an example, the thesis is aimed at exploring apt translation by analyzing the psychological state of characters in the novel.Written by contemporary British novelist Julian Barnes, the novel won Booker Prize in 2011. It is characterized by its simple language with life style as well as its short and profound contents. The fiction unfolds life of the ordinary people with its characters’psychological state penetrated all over the story. Therefore, besides word meaning, the novel focuses on exploring the psychology of characters. On the basis of psychological state of characters analysis, I, meanwhile, put my translation edition together with published edition of the novel. By comparing both translation, I would choose which one is more suitable. In the case study,I exhibit psychology of characters by linking it with the whole story while discussing how to convey characters emotion through translation. In addition, in order to get access to contemporary readers, I employ free translation and domestication policy while adding more catchwords into translation.
