The long history of Shanxi has produced an affluent and unique local culture, a notably important constituent part of the Chinese Culture. Taking the local culture and history of Shanxi as its theme, this translating task is designed to translate "Taiyuan in Qin and Han Dynasties:A City on a Strategic Location", the fourth chapter of "The History and the Culture of Taiyuan" edited by Prof. Kang Yuqing, as well as a few short stories from the chapter "Customs" in "Shanxi Stories" series, and, on this basis, to refine the translating strategies concerning the Low-Frequency Cultural-Contents (LFCC)LFCC refers to those cultural contents which have certain connections with the theme of a text but appear therein only for limited times. In contrast to the contents which have a closer connection and are repeatedly mentioned, there is less space available for a systematic and detailed interpretation of LFCC — coupled with the characteristic of "locality" in the materials involved in this task — which poses in the translation process great difficulties in sorting out an appropriate strategy. The report based on this task is, for one thing, to focus on how such translating strategies like amplification, adaptation and omission can be applied in the translation of LFCC, with practical examples raised by examining the cohesions in the target text, and, for the other, to summarize the major factors that affect the translation process and the application of each strategy.
