Research On The Reason Of Shi Ba Zhou Pu’s Compiling

Shi Ba Zhou Pu was compiled by Wang Sengru at the Emperor of Liang Wu’scommand, Bai Jia Pu is a government-revised comprehensive genealogy gathered onehundred and sixteen commanderies’ surnames. Based on the Jias genealogy, Wang Sengru,who was the outstanding representative of the Wangs genealogy, became Shi Ba ZhouPu’s compiler by emperial order for his profound family origin and genealogy background.And Shi Ba Zhou Pu’s successful compiling was related to the special economical,political, social and cultural background of the Southern Dynasties. Thisgovernment-revised comprehensive genealogy’s coming into being is not only the mark ofthe Wangs genealogy’s peak, but also the more distinct expression of the genealogy’sinternal differentiation. This work promotes the boom of Wei Jin Southern and NorthernDynasties genealogy. This paper is divided into five chapters, they are:The first part introduces the background of this topic and reviews relevant researcheson this topic. And make a summary for predecessors’ research achievements to have aknowledge on its deficiency, then put forwards this paper’s research thought and maininnovative points.The second part introduces Wang Sengru’s life story and academic attainments. Italso have a brief introduction to Shi Ba Zhou Pu. Because this work has been lost, theauther has to conclude Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynasties genealogy’s contents toinfer Shi Ba Zhou Pu’s contents.The third part emphasises on the reasons of Shi Ba Zhou Pu’s compiling. Mainly, theauther analyses them from the viewpoints of the economical, political and social andcultural backgrounds to interpret the reason of Shi Ba Zhou Pu’s compiling.The fourth part concludes Shi Ba Zhou Pu’s greatly important meaning to Wei JinSouthern and Northern Dynasties genealogy for a government-revised comprehensivegenealogy. Shi Ba Zhou Pu is not only the representative work of the Wangs genealogy, but also the more distinct expression of Wei Jin Southern and Northern Dynastiesgenealogy internal differentiation. This work’s achievement marks the research summitof the Southern Dynasties genealogy.The fifth part bases on the researches of this paper, the auther makes a brief summaryof Shi Ba Zhou Pu’s compiling reason and meaning. And add an appendix forthe comparison between the genealogy of the Southern Dynasties and the NorthernDynasties.This paper bases on the booming genealogy in Wei Jin Southern and NorthernDynasties, goes deeply into the reasons of compiling Shi Ba Zhou Pu from the points ofeconomy, politic, society and culture. And analyze this work’s positive significance to WeiJin Southern and Northern Dynasties genealogy to have a relatively comprehensivecognition and evaluation on Shi Ba Zhou Pu, and it will make up for the insufficientresearch in this field.
