A Practice Report On Interpreting For 2019 Changsha International Construction Equipment Exhibition From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

This interpretation practice report is based on the author’s practice in 2019 Changsha International Construction Equipment Exhibition,which is the first international exhibition Changsha held in terms of construction machinery with an unprecedented scale of exhibitors,professional audiences,booths and outstanding international status.The experience of being the interpreter between American and Spanish delegation and Zoomlion and Sunward Intelligence is the material that the author analyzed.This thesis is guided by the Interpretive Theory proposed by a famous French scholar,Danica Seleskovitch and case analysis was conducted with the help of the triangular model of the theory.The author illustrated the theoretical basis of the thesis,including the research basis,key concepts,and major contributions of the Interpretive Theory.Then,from the angle of the exhibition and two parties of the conversation,the background,characteristics,and purpose of this interpretation task have been elaborated.Also,the author described the interpretation process before,during,and after the task three ways.Chapter four is the key chapter of this thesis.The author analyzed and came up with four major difficulties while interpreting long sentences this time,namely intensive information,no-draft speech,missing key information,and language difference.Based on the triangular model of Interpretive Theory,the author conducted an analysis of practical materials and put forward a strategy for interpretation of long sentences which is “turn long sentences into short ones and clarify difficult sentences into simple ones”.With this strategy,the author raised four interpretation techniques to help to resolve those difficulties,namely segmentation,amplification,omission,and adjustment of word order.She even illustrated these four techniques in detail,introducing the using scenarios of these four techniques.After analysis,the author found that the Interpretive Theory is instructive to interpretation practice,especially to long sentence interpretation for it could help to resolve most of the difficulties interpreters meet while interpreting long sentences.To do a better job in helping communication,interpreters need to delve deep into thoughts and improve abilities continuously.It is hoped that this thesis could provide some inspiration to beginners in interpretation.
