Code-mixing, as a result of language contact, usually appears in a bilingual environment. In order to achieve certain communicative purpose, people mix foreign codes in the monolingual communication, thus the phenomenon of code-mixing arises. This phenomenon can be seen everywhere from the daily communication to the mass media discourse, etc.Since 1970 s, western scholars have noticed this language phenomenon and lunched researches into code-mixing from different perspectives. For decades, linguists have explored this phenomenon from four perspectives, namely, the sociolinguistic, grammatical, psychological and conversation analysis perspectives and have made great achievements. The four different research directions respectively reveal the different aspects of the code-mixing, but they cannot fully explain the mechanism and functions of code-mixing. So we have to seek a better way of research, thus, Verschueren’s pragmatic theory, the Linguistic Adaptation Theory, comes into view. In recent years, domestic scholars have also begun to notice this phenomenon. However, the studies are limited to the introduction of the existing results and discussion on the phenomenon of code-mixing in some specific texts, lacking the theoretical basis and guidance.Verschueren(1999) pointed out that language choices are influenced by social, cultural and psychological aspects. Domestic scholar Yu Guodong(2001) analyzed the phenomenon of code-mixing in the media discourse on the basis of adaptation theory and put forward the Adaptation Model. As a kind of pragmatic theory, the Adaptation Theory covers language, cultural, cognitive and social factors, and provides a good explanation for the existence of code-mixing. This thesis adopts the three representative newspapers in Jiangxi Province as corpus source, exploring the code-mixing phenomenon from a pragmatic perspective. Because newspapers are aimed at the whole society with their formal and standard language, great influence and authority, the corpus collected from them is more persuasive than that from entertaining magazines or the Internet. The significance of this research is to deepen our understanding of this specific linguistic phenomenon, further test and supplement Yu Guodong’s Linguistic Adaptation Model, shed light on the influence of the English language on Chinese and enlighten people to use code-mixing as a strategy to achieve their goals in the communication.
