With the economic development of China, many enterprises have gone abroad and carried out international cooperation in the construction and the engineering geological evaluation is the primary consideration in these projects. Domestic and foreign experts in the field of engineering geology need to exchange information for the purpose of completing engineering projects successfully. So it is necessary for the engineering geology documents to be translated into different languages. At present stage, the C-E translation of engineering geology occupies a very important position in engineering construction and it becomes an indispensable document which accelerates the development of the construction and guarantees the quality of the projects. This thesis is based on the C-E translation of Nam Ngum 3 Dam Feasibility Report which is finished by the author during her internship in the stage of postgraduate education and it is chosen as a case study for her thesis. In addition to introduction and conclusion, this thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is description of the task. In this part the author introduces the background information of Nam Ngum 3 Dam Feasibility Report and the requirements of the translation. The second part is process description. In this part, the author describes the preparation work and the translation rules followed as well as the tools adopted. According to the requirements of the task, skops rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule are the main rules followed in the translation process. The third part is the main body of the thesis, in which specific examples selected from the report are analyzed. The author tries to solve the problems in this C-E report translation by making use of different kinds of translation techniques based on translation rules. The translation techniques include amplification and omission, conversion, translation of passive, inversion and negation. In the end, the author sums up the experience learned from this C-E translation project, pointing out that a translator should obey correct procedures, take proper translation rules and translation techniques as guidance and apply different translation techniques according to different textual features of project. In addition, the author realizes through the practice that in order to become a qualified translator, his or her professional competence should be improved and comprehensive knowledge should be expanded. Equally, good qualities of conscientiousness and strictness are requisite, and translation ability would be improved through abundant translation practice.
