A Report Of Chemical Engineering Patent Translation

This thesis is about a report of chemical engineering patent translation,and source texts are from Sande Technology Company.Themes of the patents are combustion apparatus for analytical instruments,combustion chamber cleaning apparatus and vertical combustion furnace.Patent translation not only can enrich ones' professional knowledge and skill,open up and enlighten the new way of thinking,it also can effectively help facilitate competitive force.What's more,it contributes to fostering talented people and companies,thus enhances countries' economic and social development.Based on Peter Newmark's Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation Theory,the author analyzes the patent texts and defines their features,finds the difficulties on the level of word,sentence and text when translating,and works out appropriate translation solutions after the discussion with the colleague in the project and obtaining of company's feedback under the guidance of the professional professor and the supervisor.The author thinks that Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation should be treated as a whole.Thus,the author holds a view that different difficulties at different levels are supposed to be solved by creative corresponding solutions.Zero translation and transliteration,and avoidance of repetition are provided in order to transfer accurate patent information at lexical level;at textual level,the style and format should be in line with the original's.Communicative Translation can be more used at the syntactic level,and segmentation of long sentences,amplification,and conversion of passive voice sentence are also put forward to conform to readers' reading habits and Chinese usage.The author also provides advice and solutions for professionalism,such as taking training class,joint training between company and college and being responsible and confident when translating.By participating in this patent translation project,the author raises difficulties and proposes corresponding solutions,which helps her accumulate a certain degree of translation experience in the chemical engineering field.This thesis is expected to be a reference for the later translation study and practice of this kind of text thus realize the effective spreading and sharing of knowledge.
