A Translation Report On The Additional Diagnosis Of The Development Program—Restoration Of River Banks And Management Of Natural And Urban Risks Of Lushan Sichuan Province China

The present translation project is an English-Chinese translation task entitled Additional Diagnosis of the Development Program-Restoration of River Banks and Management of Natural and Urban Risks of Lushan Sichuan Province China.The English source text amounts to over 13,000 words,and the Chinese translation to about 20,000 that took the thesis author half one month to complete the translation.The thesis author is commissioned by Chengdu Lianzhong Translation Service Co.,Ltd.and the client requires that the translated version can convey detailed information of the source text completely and loyally without any omissions.In addition,the target text should keep the style of engineering texts and ensure the practicability.Based on the rules of skopos,coherence and fidelity,which are the three fundamental principles of the Skopos theory,the thesis author focuses on analyzing translation techniques of technical terms,passive voices,complicated sentences,etc.,and characteristics of engineering English texts in this translation report.The original text belongs to Engineering English,which poses challenges to the thesis author.With studies on the source text in terms of its text genre,expression and writing style,the thesis author found out several features of the original text:firstly,the use of professional and technical terms;secondly,the use of passive sentences,complicated sentences,and "it" as formal subject sentences,and thirdly the use of the present tense as its writing style.On account of above features of Engineering English,it requires the translated text should be precise,concise and objective correspondingly.Therefore,the thesis author is to solve two major problems:how to deal with those long and complicated sentences and how to cope with cohesion problems in discourse.In order to solve these problems mentioned above,the thesis author chose literal translation and liberal translation as well as other translation techniques,such as,sequential translation,inverse translation and division etc.to overcome those translation challenges under the guidance of the rules of skopos and fidelity.In addition,the thesis author adopted such cohesive devices as conjunctions and reference to deal with the cohesion problems in discourse based on the rules of skopos and coherence.In terms of geological engineering English-Chinese translation,the thesis author hopes that the translation report can help future translators learn and apply practical translation strategies and techniques better.Meanwhile the thesis author also expects that when it comes to translating those professional and practical engineering texts,future translators can accurately grasp the meaning of words and understand sentence structures as well as reproducing the original writing style.
