With the sound and rapid development of national economy, the domestic automobile market demand is surging. Therefore, numerous foreign automobile companies, satisfied by the huge market potential, low labor cost and independent research ability of China, seek cooperation and joint venture positively with Chinese companies. While domestic automobile companies,in order to learn the cutting-edge technology from foreign companies, expand international market and improve the competitiveness of their products, are willing to achieve maximal benefit and win-win cooperation through complementation. In the process of technical communication and cooperation between the two sides, translation plays a vital role. The automobile engineering English text is highly practical and technical, and it has distinctive features in lexical, syntactical and discourse levels. It requires translators to be equipped with solid language ability as well as sufficient professional background knowledge,so as to flexibly use various translation techniques and methods to fully convey the original text information. This thesis is a report on the translation of an automobile engineering English text, which is an excerpt from the translation task of Brake Cylinder Requirement Specification Book that the author receives when taking internship in an automobile parts company. After analyzing the stylistic features of source text at lexical, syntactical and discourse levels, the author combines Text Typology and German functionalist Skopos Theory, proposing the translation methods and techniques required to translate this type of text, and uses the three principles of Skopos Theory to examine the translation quality. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the description of the task, elaborating on the background, purpose and importance of the task. The second chapter mainly introduces the theoretical foundation, that is,Text Typology and Functionalist Skopos Theory, including its representatives and theories, the three basic principles and its guiding significance for translation practice. The third chapter describes the concrete process of translation practice, that is,preparation for translation, translation process and translation review. The fourth chapter is the case study.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory and combining the specific cases, the author summarizes the translation methods and techniques adopted in order to comply with three rules of Skopos Theory. The fifth chapter summarizes the whole thesis, and lists the findings as well as limitations of this translation practice.
