Mind Design Under The Perspective Of Philosophy Of Mind

Haugeland is one of the exponents during the transition period between the first generation Cognitive Philosophy and the second generation Cognitive Philosophy. His Mind Design theory provided a new research method for the development of Cognitive Philosophy, broke the completely speculative research tradition and endowed traditional method of solving the philosophical problems with highly operability.The paper mainly expounds Haugeland’s Mind Design from the perspective of the Philosophy of Mind in the following three parts:The first part mainly elaborates the enlightenment that Mind Design gains from the evolvement of the traditional Philosophy of Mind and the influence that Mind Design gets from the breeding, development and maturation of contemporary Philosophy of Mind. The traditional Philosophy of Mind provides a theoretical source for the burgeoning of Mind Design as well as a broad development space for Mind Design. While the contemporary Philosophy of Mind not only promotes the burgeoning, development and perfecting of Mind Design, but also establishes the research paradigm for Philosophy of Mind. Therefore, traditional Philosophy of Mind, together with contemporary Philosophy of Mind forms the philosophical source of Mind Design.The second part mainly elaborates Haugeland’s Mind Design from four aspects-the meaning, features, carrier and shortcomings of Mind Design. Mind Design, taking the Intelligent System as carrier, based on experiments, is a new research method according to human being’s brain structure and behavior mechanism to design the "brain structure" and "behavior mechanism" of Intelligent System, which reflects Intentionality features of Mind Design.The third part expounds that Haugeland’s Mind Design promotes the development of the Philosophy of Mind and verifies the standards of the Cognitive Philosophy Intelligentization, so that explains the significance of Haugeland’s Mind Design. Haugeland’s Mind Design is a new thinking method originated by integrating the historical experience of subjects like Philosophy of Mind and Cognitive Philosophy and in turn promotes the perfection of Philosophy of Mind theory as well as the development of the Cognitive Philosophy Intelligentization.
