As a reflection of the first World War,The youth in All quiet on the Western Front and A Farewell to Arms were from the same war era. They were typical of people changing from pure blood, full of youthful spirit youth to disappointment, empty, painful and lost generation.They are struggling in the survival plights and can’t be able to find a way out.Upon them are imbued with strong tragedy consciousness.The stories came from the real war experience of the two authers.The two authors Remarque and Hemingway participated in the first world war.What the war brought them is unable to resolve the confusion and perplexity.They fighted with the real world on their own ways,which getting things no right.As the art comes from life, the tragic consciousness of the writers in the works is a natural infiltration.Although the tragic consciousness is all about the contradictions between human and the plight of the survival,the different life experiences and personal values lead to different tragic consciousness.The full text is divided into three parts. The first part is the discussion about implications for theory and practice of the study, domestic and foreign study status of two works and the innovations of this paper.The second part is the main body part,dividing into three chapters. Chapter 1 is inevitable fate,comparativly analysising war and death.Chapter 2 is the contradiction, comparativly analysising the similarities and differences between two main contradictions,living and death,dream and reality.Chapter3 is self-consciousness,diving the self-consciousness of the two works into confusion,loneliness and desparate according to the development.The third part is the conclusion,a summaryof the main content of the article and pointing out the meaning and the study.
