Translation Report Of Chapter Ⅳ Of Police Ethics

The translation report is accomplished according to the translation practice of the fourth chapter of Police Ethics. It is a collection of articles that combine historical and contemporary analyses of police ethics and police corruption. By doing the translation, the author finds that nominalization is very common in legal English. Nominalization is an unmarked form of written language. The common way to have nominalization in legal English is to add suffix to verbs and adjectives or to transform. By means of nominalization, the legal text becomes more fair and objective, the amount of information and coherence of legal text also increased. In this report, the author will use two methods: literal translation and free translation. Free translation may be further subdivided into conversion and amplification.Literal and free translation have their own merits in legal English translation. Literal translation strictly complies with original wording model. It does not change the original form, style and content, which will be presented to the target language readers, so often used in the translation. As another indispensable translation method, free translation focus on transferring the “spirit” of a source text over accurate reproduction of the original wording. It is in pursuit of the fluency and smoothness of target language.Therefore, we should consider the most appropriate translation methods or techniques in translating English legal writing, to achieve the closest equivalence.In other words, “There is not the best method in translation”. In specific translation process, there is no absolute "king’s rule", so are literal translation, free translation.
