This report is a translation commentary on the translation project whose source text is Chapter 3 of Perspectives on American Law,a book discussing various aspects of American law in a simple and profound way, including a general introduction, lawyers and law in America, the court system and the judges in America, private and public in American law as well as tools for research in American law.Chapter 3 —“An Overview of Clinical Legal Education” discusses the rise and development of clinical legal education and lists two examples to illustrate its practice in US.As this chapter falls into the category of scholarly legal works,a large number of nominalizations and logic connectors are used to express complex academic concepts, and highlight the academic preciseness and logic rigor.Meanwhile, they have posed great difficulties to the translation. Therefore, the translation report focuses on the techniques of their translation. For nominalizations, which are usually transformed from verb or adjective to make the text more objective and professional, three translation techniques are proposed, namely, retention, conversion and amplification. For logical connectors, whose usage is significantly different between English and Chinese, there are also three techniques for their translation proposed in this report:retention, omission and amplification.Hopefully, this report will provide some guidance for learners and practitioners as well in the field of legal translation.
