Compared with previous China School animations, the new century Chinese animations are added many new elements in the aspects of characters setting, materials selection for the plot and theme establishment. These new elements, blended into films by the ingenious narrative strategy, reveal themselves to the viewers. By conducting research into the narrative strategies, we can precisely and objectively grasp the achievements and inadequacies of the new century Chinese animations’way to commercial theater chains in recent 10 years, which could enable us to find the ever-lasting momentum conducive to the future creation of animations.Taking account of subjects, box office, word of mouth, etc., and choosing The Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf 2, Little Soldier Chang Ka-tse, McDull--Kung Fu Kindergarten, The Butterfly Lovers and Cribug --five typical Chinese animations in the new century--as example, and from the perspective of inner animations, this dissertation analyzes the narrative strategy vertically. In Chapter 1, it has a general introduction of the theory and methodology of narratology, as well as the development and limitations of Chinese animations since the beginning of the new century. From Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, in specific films, it focuses on the four major elements--key character, plot, time-space and theme--in the narrative strategy.In Chapter 2, applying the methodology of structuralism narraology, it discusses the character and plot setting in narration, and analyzes character types, functional characters as well as the structure of the combination of characters respectively. Also, it studies the plot setting from three ways including plot types, materials selection and adaption for the plot, and the structure of combination of plot. In Chapter 3, it explores the way of setting time and space elements in the narrative which has fiction and presumptive different from other genres. It also explores the way of theme setting, which respect of the 3-D structure of the theme, proper ways of expression and aesthetic forms in narrative strategy. By these systematic analyses, we have a critical understanding of the achievements and limitations of the narration in the new century Chinese animations, and learn from the successful cases to gather experience for the development and creation in the future.
