The border region of Inner Mongolia and Liaoning province is a region with a long history, where humans have long lived and created a splendid civilization. The region belonged to the distribution area of the Lower Xiajiadian culture and Gaotaishan culture in Xia and Shang period, and the phenomenon of funerary pottery upended in the tombs is often found in this period. This paper mainly uses archaeological method to sort the tombs and the upside-down funerary pottery, analysis the feature of the tombs and related artifacts, and discuss the correlation between the special phenomenon and burial elements.This paper will also discuss the function and cultural meanings of the upside-down funerary pottery, and further to interpret the cultural exchange situation in this region.This paper is divided into five parts. The introduction part is mainly to illustrate the relative term used in this paper and inductive discovery and research progress. The first chapter is mainly to research the tombs and the upside-down funerary pottery by using archaeological typology method, sum up the combination characteristics of the funerary pottery, divide the remains into three distribution areas and explain the tomb’s time. The second chapter provides details of characteristics of the tomb and focuses on the correlation between the upside-down funerary pottery and burial elements. The third chapter is mainly to discuss some of the problems associated with the upside-down funerary pottery, such as the source and course of the phenomenon and so on. The last part summarizes the main ideas of the article.According to the research, this paper indicates the upside-down funerary pottery is a special kind of buried artifacts, which is used to show the identity and status of the tomb’s master. This special phenomenon is the result under the action of human consciousness, and partly reflects the communication between the Lower Xiajiadian culture and Gaotaishan culture.
